It was initially named Cannonsburgh, after Newton Cannon who was Rutherford County’s member of the state’s legislature in 1811 when a seat was created for the county. This is another destination that locals get to visit, and it’s a tourist destination for many people.
After the war, Murfreesboro recovered pretty fast, and in 1911, the Middle Tennessee State Normal School was created as 2-year teachers’ training institute, and by 1925, it had become a four-year college. In 1965, it morphed to MTSU.
